This blog post is a collection of recommendations and reviews of places we love in and around the Rawtenstall area.
Waterfoot Yard
Tucked just a little bit back from the roundabout in Waterfoot sits what is a brilliant representation of everything we love about our local area! Waterfoot Yard frequently hosts quiz nights, curry nights, games nights and more to help bring the local community together. Inside, you'll be met by friendly staff and the most spectacular collection of work from local artists and creators that are on display almost anywhere you look. Most of the artwork you see in the cafe area is for sale, and we highly recommend having a look as the artists are so talented and priced really reasonably. Across from the cafe is a small shop, which stocks all sorts of goods from small businesses like jewellery, candles, homeware and more. If you don't go for the food (which is also great!) - it's just as great for a coffee and a mooch round the brilliant display of art our local community has created.
Manr
If you're after a luxury feel, Manr is the place! Based in Whittaker Park, Rawtenstall, Manr has a really contemporary feeling bar and restaurant with a menu full of great food. The coffee is amazing - and we've been on many a sunny day to enjoy their outside terrace area that has serene views over Whittaker park. The terrace area also contains tables with fire pits, and covered areas, so you can enjoy the outdoors even if the weather isn't great (we have also enjoyed a cocktail or two no less comfortably whilst it has been raining there!)
The adjoining Whittaker museum is free to enter and holds a fantastic selection of art and sculptures, as well as running regular events you can be a part of. As well as the museum, just opposite from Manr the park has a community garden that blooms with all kinds of flowers and herbs that makes a great picnic spot. Dog-friendly and perfect for a date night or a meal with the family, we really love Manr and recommend it to everyone!
The Water Trough
Based about 10 or 15 minutes from the centre of Rawtenstall, in Water, is the family-ran cafe The Water Trough. We have been here many a time and love the really friendly, cosy and chatty atmosphere as well as amazing food! There is always a selection of incredible home-bakes on the counter, and the menu has a bit of something for everyone. Our favourite thing about The Water Trough is the relaxed atmosphere, you'll never feel rushed out the door. It's completely dog-friendly - in fact, our dog has often been brought out his own mini sausages cooked by the chef completely free of charge! This place is your perfect local cafe, with good food and good people.
Vending in the Valley
This small vending machine based on Burnley Road is absolutely packed full of delicious food by local vendors. Vending in the Valley sits in the front garden of the family that own it, and is fully self serviced. We love it for our weekly eggs, bread and butter all sourced from local businesses and farms - like the artisan sourdough by The Crust, a bakery based in Bacup or within Rawtenstall Market. It's a really convenient way to access a range of small businesses within the community, and you won't regret making the swaps from your supermarket staples because the quality of the food is outstanding.
The Stinky Chef
And last on our personal faves list of food places in Rawtenstall, but definitely by no means least, is the Stinky Chef. If you're from Rawtenstall, the chances are you'll have visited here already as it has absolutely glowing reviews from everybody. I'm not sure whether to describe this as just a sandwich shop, as the sandwiches that do take centre stage of their menu are like no other sandwich we have ever had! Think of the normal size of a sandwich, and double it. Each week there is a new special to try, and we also really recommend trying the n'duja sausage rolls whenever they're available. Basically anything you eat from here will be incredible - just be warned that these sandwiches are a bit dangerous to eat if you're wearing your favourite white t-shirt.
And that wraps it up! There are so many other local businesses we love in Rawtenstall, but for now, this is just a list of 5 that we love and recommend to friends and family visiting. We're by no means food critics, but a local family that love our town and love a good lunch out here - we hope you enjoy these recommendations!
